Toyota Not in The Top 10 Largest EV Sellers in the World

Sales of electric cars in 2023 are increasing very fast. Market research firm, Canalys, released the total sales of electric cars that occurred during this half year in general.

The total number of electric cars sold in the world has reached 6,2 million units. That number rose 49 percent compared to the same period last year.

Interestingly, in the list of the top 10 best-selling electric car sellers in the world, Toyota’s name is not found. The first-ranking best-selling electric car seller in the world is the Chinese electric car BYD with sales of 1.3 million units.

After that, it was filled by the most popular electric car in the world, Tesla. The electric car company led by Elon Musk has succeeded in selling 935,000 electric cars over the past six months.

“BYD leads electric car sales where Tesla continues to trail with a very attractive price-cutting strategy,” wrote Canalys, quoted by MNC Portal Indonesia, Monday (9/10/2023).

Interestingly, according to Canalys’ observations, 55 percent of electric car sales occurred in China. From there, it is not surprising that Chinese electric cars dominate electric car sales.

Apart from BYD, other Chinese electric cars in the top 10 are SAIC Motors in fourth place, Geely in fifth place, and GAC in 10th place.

Other names in the top 10 list are Volkswagen in third place, Stellantis in sixth place, Hyundai in seventh position, BMW in eighth position, and Mercedes-Benz in ninth position.

In fact, the name Toyota is not visible on the list at all. Even though currently Toyota is the largest seller of conventional cars in the world.

The Autopro website states that sales of conventional Toyota cars have actually reached 6,650,425 units to date. This record puts Toyota in the number one position for sales of conventional cars worldwide.

“With such a large sales volume, there are other things that Toyota must be wary of regarding the implementation of electric cars. Until August 2023, they will only be able to sell 65,467 electric cars globally. Very small compared to other manufacturers,” wrote Autopro.
It is believed that Toyota has a different strategy in the electric car business. The Japanese car company prefers to transition from conventional to hybrid and then move on to electric cars.

They are even very serious about developing electric cars because they have invested USD 35 billion or the equivalent of IDR 544.4 trillion for the development of electric cars. It is hoped that this amount of funding will provide 30 Toyota electric cars by 2030.

It’s just that many analysts say this step is too late because of Toyota’s own strategy.
