Actor Tom Cruise never runs out of unique driving styles in every new film. This time he proved himself able to drift with only one hand in the film Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning.
In the pre-trailer preview that was circulated by the YouTube account Paramount Pictures recently, several car chase scenes were shown which really caught the eye. In some of the scenes, Tom Cruise, who plays Ethan Hawke, can be seen driving a car in a very unusual way, namely drifting with one hand.
What’s more, the one-handed drifting action was not only done with one car but two cars. The first car is a BMW 5 series and the second is a classic Fiat 500 car.
“The best part of this car chase scene is that Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell’s hands are bound by handcuffs. So Tom Cruise has to drive the car with one hand,” said Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning film director, Christopher McQuarrie.
Interestingly, in this scene, Tom Cruise doesn’t want to pretend to drive a car with one hand at all. Even though it can actually be edited with special techniques, Tom Cruise still asks to drive the car with one hand.
Including when the car is invited to drift to make the car chase scene even more interesting. The challenge was even bigger when Tom Cruise did it in the second car.
Because the classic Fiat 500 car that he brought was much smaller than the first car, namely the BMW 5 series.
“I did the scene of the car turning 200 degrees with only one hand. This I will really never forget,” explains Hayley Atwell.
Christopher McQuarrie said Tom Cruise played an important role in the tense scene. He is not sure that there are other actors who can do this as well as Tom Cruise, namely drifting with one hand.
“This scene would not have worked if Tom Cruise had not done it,” said the director who once wrote the screenplay for The Usual Suspects.
