The population of electric cars in Indonesia is getting bigger. This is marked by the increasingly fast sales of electric cars in the country.
Based on wholesale sales data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), electric car sales in 2023 in the first half of this year reached more than 5,000 units.
Several electric cars dominate sales, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Wuling Air ev. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 recorded wholesale sales of 3,543 units. Wuling Air ev is in second place with sales of 1,654 units.
The two electric cars are currently cheaper. This is because the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Wuling Air ev which have been produced locally in Indonesia have received incentives in the form of VAT discounts. So there are quite a lot of fans.
Meanwhile, other electric cars are still imported intact from abroad. The sales figures are not as big as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Wuling Air ev.
Previously, General Chair of GAIKINDO Yohannes Nangoi said that sales of electric cars were still relatively small. “Car sales, if you want to say that they sell, are a minimum of 200,000 to 250,000. We can wait for electric cars to reach that number, but not too long. The longest is 4 to 5 years,” said Yohannes Nangoi.
Yohannes Nangoi explained that the high sales figures will be followed by the development of its supporting industries. In fact, this will increase the local component by up to 90 percent.
This will have an impact on affordable prices, so that people will make electric cars an option in deciding to buy a vehicle, especially for first buyers.
“I will give an example, like Toyota and Daihatsu collaborating to make Agya and Ayla, or not Honda making Mobilio and Brio Satya, the volume is quite good. So, the local automatic components have reached 90 percent, so people are competing to make them,” said Nangoi.
