Daihatsu has announced a recall for one of their vehicles, the Daihatsu Gran Max. The recalled model is marketed in Japan.
The Daihatsu Gran Max produced and sold in Indonesia is not affected at all. This is confirmed by the statement from the Marketing Director & Corporate Communication Director of PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM), Sri Agung Handayani, who said that the Daihatsu Gran Max units in Indonesia are not impacted by the recall.
“In response to the question, we convey that the Gran Max produced and marketed in Indonesia is not affected by this issue because each country has different part specifications including the regulations that govern them,” said Agung.
It is known that Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd is recalling Daihatsu Gran Max units in Japan because the vehicles do not meet the established standards.
In addition to the Gran Max, other affected models include the Toyota Town Ace and Mazda Bongo. Daihatsu Japan has also reported this recall to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan.
The recall was conducted after technical verification and compliance testing by MLIT revealed that the vehicles did not meet the established standards. However, as it takes time to prepare replacement parts, customers will be notified once these components are ready to be replaced.
More specifically, the issue faced is related to the vehicle’s battery risk. In the event of an accident, the battery may move excessively or even dislodge from its position.
“Due to insufficient testing on battery equipment during development, there is a risk that the battery may move excessively, dislodge, and fail to secure the battery in place in the event of a rear-end collision,” stated Daihatsu in a press release on Monday (8/7/2024).
“Battery equipment in all vehicles will be replaced with appropriate parts, and battery holders will be added,” it continued.
Previously, the Japanese government revoked the licenses for the Daihatsu Gran Max, Toyota Town Ace, and Mazda Bongo. MLIT Japan conducted an investigation following procedural deviations in the Daihatsu vehicle certification process.
