Palestinians Switch to Classic Cars because of Israel’s Embargo

Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip have not felt the pleasure of sitting in a new car for a long time. This suffering occurs because Israel is still implementing a new car embargo policy to the region.

Quoted by Carsifu, Monday (28/8/2023), this policy was carried out because Israel was worried that various components in the new car would actually be used to make weapons. From there, Israel continued to block new cars from entering the Gaza Strip.

As a result, many residents of the Gaza Strip can only be entertained by the cars that were previously available. The rest actually revive classic cars that are still charming by making replicas.

One of them is Munir al-Shandi, a resident of the Gaza Strip who is now building a replica of the classic Mercedes-Benz Gazelle made in 1929. “Everyone is surprised and often takes pictures of the car I make,” said the man who works as a mechanic every day.

Munir al-Shandi admitted that the replica car he made would be even cooler if the spare parts needed were available. The problem is Israel still continues to block access to the Gaza Strip. Including banning automotive components from entering the conflict area.

Some components even had to be smuggled in so that the replica car could be made. The goods were then brought across the borders of Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

“Waiting for the goods to arrive took eight months,” explained Munir al-Shandi.

He admits that the classic Mercedes-Benz car is not the only car he has rebuilt. Previously he had also made a classic car from England, Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane.

Now in Carsifu’s garage, there are three classic car frames from Ford, Audi and Saab. He said he would revive the cars soon.

Interestingly he is not at all interested in selling the classic cars he made again.

“This car is not for sale even though many are interested not only in Gaza but also from abroad,” he explained.
