Mercedes-Benz admits that they don’t want to make expensive pickups anymore. Because the car they had made before, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class was not selling well in the market.
This contrasts with other pickups which are usually well absorbed in the US and Southeast Asian markets. It’s no wonder that many car manufacturers never forget to include pickups in their product line.
“The pickup car segment is still very large. It’s just that currently our customers have never asked about this type of car,” said Marion Friese, Global Head of Marketing for Mercedes-Benz Vans.
He said that until now Mercedes-Benz had never had any real plans to make another pickup. So there is absolutely no desire to continue or present the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class.
“But Mercedes-Benz is a company that tries to listen to the wishes of consumers. So we’ll see in the future,” said Marion Friese.
It is known that the luxury Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup was first released in 2017. In fact, only 16,700 units were sold in the first year of sales.
In 2020, Mercedes-Benz finally inoculated the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, which was not selling well despite the enormous market potential.
The Drive website states that consumers are reluctant to buy the Mercedes-Benz X-Class because they are considered too expensive. When it was released in 2017, the price of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class was USD 79,415 or reaching IDR 1.1 billion.
That price is too high considering that the Mercedes-Benz X-Class still shares chassis with the Japanese-made Nissan Navara pickup.
Mercedes-Benz only needs to change the badge and also install a more powerful V6 engine. In addition, they also make luxury features that are usually found in cars made by Mercedes-Benz.
“But the design that is made is also almost not too different from the Nissan Navara, so that many people are reluctant to have it,” Drive analysis.
