Investigation into Honda’s eSAF Framework Turns Out Not Completed

Investigations and research regarding Honda’s eSAF (enhanced Smart Architechture Frame) frame have apparently not been completed. The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) is still investigating the case of the broken eSAF frame.

As is known, the Ministry of Transportation through the Directorate General of Land Transportation (Ditjen Hubdat) and the NTSC released the results of research into the eSAF framework. It is stated that Honda’s eSAF frame production process is in accordance with global standards.

However, rust was found on consumer motorbikes on the inside of the eSAF frame which was not coated with coating. The bottom drain hole also has the potential to become clogged, which can cause water to stagnate, causing rust.

It turns out that the investigation and research on the eSAF framework carried out by the Ministry of Transportation and the NTSC together with PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM) has not been completed. This gives a breath of fresh air to consumers who are not satisfied with previous answers.

Director of the Maritime Industry for Transportation Equipment and Defense Equipment at the Ministry of Industry, R. Hendro Martono, said that currently his party is still waiting for the results from the NTSC regarding the eSAF framework.

“We can’t talk yet, because we are still waiting for the results from the KNKT,” said Hendro to journalists when met in the Senayan area, Central Jakarta, Monday (18/9/2023).

Director General of Land Transportation Hendro Sugiatno in a previous statement also indicated that the investigation had not been completed. He also asked consumers to be patient because the research carried out prioritizes safety.

“The results of the research conducted by the research team have been followed up. “We, together with the KNKT, will oversee and supervise the process of examining and handling the eSAF framework,” said Hendro in an official statement from the Directorate General of Communications.

The research team from the Directorate General of Human Relations and the NTSC, AHM, made the eSAF frame from raw material in the form of High Strength Steel (HSS) which was processed into a frame. Then the coating is applied using the CED (Cathodic Electro Deposition) method by dipping.

The research team looked at the product quality control process starting from the incoming material, pressing, welding and coating stages. Control items including dimensions and thickness of the coating process results have been carried out and have met the requirements of global manufacturing standards.

Based on the results of finite element method calculations and validated by actual testing at AHM’s facilities, it can be said that the eSAF frame structure is quite strong and does not have critical areas or fatigue with high stress loads. The stress that occurs is still far below the Yield Point (elastic limit) of the frame material.
