Indonesia’s Car Exports Mostly Sent to the Philippines

Indonesia’s car exports in mid-2024 have shown an interesting trend. According to reports from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesian-made cars in the international market are experiencing an upward trend.

Acting Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, when met by reporters on Monday (July 15, 2024), stated that this increase has actually been occurring over the past three years. This is evident from commodities with Harmonized System (HS) codes 8702 and 8703. It was also reported that the percentage contribution to non-oil and gas exports in January-June 2024 was 2.4 percent.

“Historically, from 2021 to 2023, the value of car exports from Indonesia has continued to increase, although from January to June 2024 the increase was slightly lower compared to the same period last year,” she said.

She explained that in 2021, Indonesia’s car exports were valued at US$ 3.39 billion, increasing to US$ 5.57 billion in 2022, and rising again to US$ 6.12 billion in 2023.

Meanwhile, for January-June 2024, BPS has recorded the value of car exports from Indonesian manufacturers at US$ 2.78 billion.

Furthermore, Amalia said that based on the percentage of market share by destination country for four-wheeled vehicle exports from Indonesia in the January-June 2024 period, the Philippines accounted for 27.64 percent, Vietnam 16.17 percent, and Saudi Arabia 15.52 percent.

“When viewed by destination country, the Philippines is the main destination, covering 27.64 percent of the total value of car exports from Indonesia or about one in four cars exported from Indonesia are sent to the Philippines. Additionally, cars from Indonesia are also heavily exported to Vietnam and Saudi Arabia,” she said.

Indonesian-made cars exported to the Philippines include the Toyota Innova and Toyota Fortuner (produced by PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia), Toyota Avanza, Toyota Rush, and Toyota Wigo or the twin of Agya/Ayla (produced by PT Astra Daihatsu Motor), Mitsubishi Xpander, Mitsubishi Xpander Cross, Mitsubishi XForce (PT Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Indonesia), Suzuki Cary, Suzuki APV (PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales), and Isuzu Traga (PT Isuzu Astra Motor Indonesia).
