Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Battery Factory, Production of 100,000 Units a Year

The government continues to strive to collaborate with investors to strengthen the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia. This is done to ensure that the supply of electric vehicles from upstream to downstream is available.

Most recently, the Center for Survey and Testing of Electricity, New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (BBSP KEBTKE) signed a collaboration with TDL Global. This collaboration was carried out to present electric motorbike batteries.

Head of BBSP KEBTKE Senda Hurmuzan Kanam revealed the collaboration with TDL Global regarding the supply of 20,000 batteries in 2023. The figure will increase to 100,000 in 2024 from China’s Technology With Spirit (TWS) factory.

In fact, to simplify the supply of electric motorbike batteries, TDL Global is ready to relocate their factory to Indonesia. It is reported that this will be done next year to support KBLBB (Battery Based Electric Motorized Vehicles).

“To supply (batteries) 100,000 units in 2024, TDL will relocate its production factory from China to Indonesia,” said Senda as quoted in the official statement from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Monday (18/9/2023).

TDL Global has signed an agreement with the State Electricity Company (PLN) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. This agreement was made to launch a feasibility study for power generation plans in the Southeast Asian country.

“To realize the objectives of the KBLBB program, of course, requires support from various parties and of course solid support will be able to realize the KBLBB ecosystem,” said Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Rachmat Kaimuddin.

According to Reuters, TDL Global will invest 200 million dollars or the equivalent of IDR 3 trillion in 2030 to produce electric motorbike batteries and energy storage systems.

“By 2030, we have plans to build a 1 Gigawatt battery factory here (Indonesia), mainly using solid-state batteries,” said Jackam Kim, CEO of TDL Global, quoted by Reuters.

Solid-state batteries use a thin layer of solid electrolyte that carries lithium-ions between electrodes. These batteries are used in small electronic devices such as pacemakers and smart watches.

Unfortunately, mass production of this type of battery for use in electric vehicles is proceeding very slowly. The reason is, currently electric vehicle manufacturers still rely on lithium ion batteries.
