The Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia agreed to establish a joint electric vehicle ecosystem. This needs to be done by a number of countries in the Southeast Asia region (ASEAN).
This was conveyed at the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ (AEM) Meeting – AIA (ASEAN Investment Area) Council in Semarang, Central Java. Bahlil said that ASEAN must continue to improve its achievements regarding EV development.
Moreover, in 2022, world investment related to EV in ASEAN will increase sharply by up to 570 percent reaching USD 18 billion or the equivalent of Rp. 275 trillion. However, Bahlil reminded the importance of formulating a joint formulation for the development of the EV ecosystem in ASEAN.
“We also agreed on the importance of carrying out a formulation for the development of a new renewable energy ecosystem. Then reducing emissions, and the need to emphasize the electric car ecosystem is one of the most important parts,” Bahlil said in an official statement.
“Because Indonesia is developing itself, Malaysia itself, Vietnam, Thailand, almost all countries are developing EV ecosystems. And this is the most important part that we formulate, “he added.
Bahlil mentioned, the ASEAN region has proven to be the main destination for investment in the development of the EV ecosystem. It can be seen that almost all ASEAN member countries have programs to develop EVs.
In addition, the top 10 global electric vehicle manufacturers are investing in the ASEAN region. Meanwhile, nine out of 10 electric battery manufacturers are also actively investing in the ASEAN region.
The same thing was conveyed by the Minister of Investment, Deputy Director General of the Foreign Investment Agency, Vietnam’s Ministry of Planning and Investment Nguyen Anh Tuan. He revealed that there is great potential for ASEAN member countries to jointly develop the EV ecosystem.
Nguyen conveyed the need for effective solidarity and collaboration in developing a potential sector such as EV. This is done in order to positively contribute to sustainable development.
“I believe that ASEAN is capable of becoming a region that develops an electric vehicle ecosystem. I fully agree with the Chair that to attract FDI and also to develop potential sectors such as electric vehicles. We can’t do it alone, we need to work together,” Nguyen said.
