Indonesia is believed to be able to position itself as an industrial and export base for electric motorbikes. It is believed that this condition will soon be realized because in the future Indonesia will become the country with the third largest population of electric motorbikes in the world.
“Indonesia will only lose to China and India,” said Abdullah Alwi, Secretary of the Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Industry Association (AISMOLI) when he was a resource person for Xplore Electric Motorcycles, Thursday (25/1/2024).
Abdullah Alwi said this hope was based on data created by McKinsey & Company entitled “The Real Global EV Buzz Comes on Two Wheels”. The data states that the Southeast Asia region will be a strong trigger for the development of electric vehicles. This is believed to be due to the increasing adoption of electric motorbikes in society.
“This is an industrial opportunity. If we read the data, Indonesia currently has quite a lot of companies developing electric motorbikes. So this is an opportunity for us to become an industrial base and be able to export,” he said.
It’s just that currently sales of electric motorbikes in Indonesia still need encouragement. It still takes time for electric motorbikes to match sales of conventional motorbikes, which are much more mature.
Abdullah Alwi admitted this, the population of electric motorbikes in the country is not yet close to petrol motorbikes. However, the increase in numbers is significant for the size of a new vehicle.
“As of this month, there are more than 75 thousand units of electric motorbikes circulating in Indonesia. This has increased significantly. In fact, in 2020, the number was still hundreds of units,” said Abdullah Alwi.
