Hyundai Ioniq 5 Still Lead EV Sales in Indonesia

South Korea’s electric car, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, is leading electric car sales in Indonesia during the January-August 2023 period. Based on Gaikindo data, it is stated that sales of electric cars over the past eight months have reached 37,499 units.

This achievement increased 467.99 percent compared to last year’s electric car sales in the same period. So, from January to August 2023 sales of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric car will reach 4,315 units.

This figure is double the sales achievement of the Chinese-made electric car, Wuling Air ev, which reached 2,121 units. This note is very interesting because in terms of price, the Wuling Air EV should be able to attract more attention from the Indonesian people because it is much more affordable than the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Currently Wuling Air ev comes in three variants. The three are Wuling Air ev Lite at IDR 206 million, Wuling Air ev Standard Range at IDR 243 million, and Wuling Air ev Long Range at IDR 229.5 million.

Compare this with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 which has four variants. The four variants are the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Prime Standard Range at IDR 759 million, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Prime Long Range at IDR 800 million, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Signature Standard Range at IDR 820 million, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Signature Long Range at IDR 870 million.

This means that the lowest price for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the same as three Wuling Air ev units. It’s just that this condition doesn’t make the Wuling Air EV any more popular than the Hyundai Ioniq 5 this year.

This condition is a bit of a contrast to previous expectations. Many analysts say that the price of electric cars in Indonesia is still very expensive.

This is because the Indonesian people want the price of electric cars sold to be in the range of IDR 300 million. This is because the best-selling cars in Indonesia on average have a price tag of IDR 300 million.

For example, the statement by Kukuh Kumara, General Secretary of Gaikindo, said that the market share for electric cars that is most popular with Indonesians is under IDR 300 million. He said there was still little interest in electric cars with prices above IDR 300 million-IDR 500 million

“Most people who buy electric cars in Indonesia have affordable prices under IDR 300 million. If the price is above IDR 300 million, the volume is very small,” said Kukuh at the Denpasar 12 Discussion Forum: Challenges and Opportunities for Adopting Electric Vehicles, online, Wednesday.
