GIIAS 2024: A Stepping Stone for Electric Vehicles in Indonesia

The Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2024 is set to officially open on July 18, 2024, with the press day starting earlier on July 17, 2024.

This year’s GIIAS event is particularly special compared to previous years. For the first time, the number of participants has reached 55 brands.

“The highest number of participants in the history of Gaikindo exhibitions since it was first held in 1986,” said Rizwan Alamsjah, Gaikindo’s Third Chairman and Exhibition Organizer, proudly.

For the first time as well, in the GIIAS 2024 event at ICE BSD, Tangerang, Banten, the organizers have added a new hall. This addition seems to affirm Rizwan Alamsjah’s statement.

Moreover, for the first time in the history of GIIAS, the presence of electric cars is significantly increasing on the exhibition floor. This presence seems to indicate that Indonesian society is beginning to understand and trust electric vehicles.

Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motors Indonesia, Franciscus Soerjopranoto, agrees with this. He said that Indonesian automotive consumers are gradually maturing in accepting battery-based cars.

“The acceptance is getting better. Back in 2019, people still had many concerns, such as where to charge the car, how the battery works, whether it’s safe, and what about the service,” said Franciscus Soerjopranoto in the PIK 2 area, Tangerang, on Friday.

With various conveniences and extensive information about the existence of emission-free vehicles, consumers are increasingly confident in driving these vehicles.

Various technological advances that further perfect these vehicles, such as rapidly developing battery technology, make consumers feel more confident in driving them.

“Nowadays, the range is getting longer,” he said.

Moreover, the habit of Indonesians in buying vehicles, who often consider the resale value, is not a significant issue in this segment.

“Looking at recent times, it’s like the ecosystem of mobile phones, where consumers don’t think about the resale value,” he explained.

With consumers’ trust in electric vehicles in Indonesia, the sales of these vehicles have seen significant growth. It is no wonder that various renowned automotive brands are also introducing battery-based vehicles to the Indonesian market.

GIIAS 2024 might indeed be a stepping stone for electric vehicles to leap even higher. Although it hasn’t surpassed the sales of conventional cars in Indonesia, at least it is no longer just a vehicle that represents prestige.
