First Electric Car Assembly Begins, This is Chery’s Next Move

PT Chery Sales Indonesia (CSI) has started assembling their first electric car, the Chery Omoda E5, at the factory owned by PT Handal Motor Indonesia (HMI) in Pondok Ungu, Bekasi, West Java. Harry Kamora, Vice President of PT CSI said that Chery car assembly capacity at HMI reaches 1,000 to 1,500 units per month.

“A total of 250-300 units will assemble the Chery Omoda E5,” explained Harry Kamora.

He said that later the electric car that Chery had completed assembling would be distributed to existing Chery dealers. This unit will later be used as a show unit and test drive.

“We will allocate the rest for bookings. Gone are the days when buying a car you have to pivot,” said Harry Kamora.

Furthermore, Head of Brand PT CSI Rifkie Setiawan said that Chery is currently conducting discussions with suppliers and vendors regarding the Chery Omoda E5. This concerns charging car batteries, in order to make consumers calmer about their electric cars.

“We also have a commitment, but we are currently studying with suppliers to provide wall charging, but that is still in the discussion process,” said Rifkie Setiawan.

“Also, several of our vendors are currently conducting discussions regarding SPKLU or charging which Chery specifically has,” he continued.

He emphasized that infrastructure is very important when launching electric cars in Indonesia. The reason is, this will make consumers more comfortable in using battery-based environmentally friendly vehicles.

“This is one of the services for EV users from Chery, so we are trying to make Chery EVs comfortable to use. “So, there are many available facilities related to the Chery EV itself, and this has been planned and is being discussed and will be informed later,” he said.

Rifkie Setiawan also stated that every Chery dealer will be equipped with a battery charging station. This will provide peace of mind for electric car users in carrying out mobility, both short and long distances.

To date, Rifkie said that the Chery Omoda E5 has received orders for up to 400 units since its introduction. CSI also ensures that this car is ready to be sent to consumers in the first half of 2024.

“The locally assembled Omoda E5 will also be exported to several countries with right-hand drive. “What opportunities are produced in Indonesia can be exported, we are a production base for right-hand drive (Chery car) models,” said Rifkie.
