Electric Car Sales Soar in Indonesia, But E-Motorbikes Struggle

Electric car sales in Indonesia continue to climb steadily. According to data from the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), 8,835 electric cars were sold in March 2025, an impressive 70.46% jump from the previous month’s 5,183 units.

PT Mobil Anak Bangsa (MAB), a local electric vehicle manufacturer, weighed in on this trend. Puryanto, MAB’s General Manager of License and Government Relations, said several factors contribute to the stronger performance of electric cars compared to electric motorbikes.

“Electric cars are becoming more affordable. In fact, some models are now cheaper than conventional or hybrid cars,” said Puryanto during the 2025 Periklindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) held at JIEXPO Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Thursday.

Beyond pricing, strong sales have also been driven by advanced features and cutting-edge technology. According to Puryanto, high-tech components and modern design appeal particularly to Indonesia’s growing middle- and upper-class consumers.

Public trust in EVs is also on the rise. Backed by expanding charging infrastructure from both the government and private sector, four-wheeled electric vehicles are becoming a viable daily transportation option.

“More people—especially in the upper-middle class—are beginning to seriously consider switching to electric vehicles,” he added.

Meanwhile, electric motorbike sales tell a different story. The market remains sluggish, with little to get excited about. Puryanto pointed out that one major issue is the lack of financing support from leasing companies.

“Electric motorbike sales haven’t taken off like cars because around 90% of motorbike purchases in Indonesia rely on leasing. If financing options aren’t widely available, it’s a real barrier,” he explained.

The Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Association even reported that sales of electric motorbikes in early 2025 dropped by as much as 70% compared to the same period last year.

Still, the booming electric car market offers a glimmer of hope for the national automotive industry as the country pushes forward in its transition to eco-friendly transportation.
