Indonesia seems to be a promising electric car market for automotive players from China. The proof is that next year, the Chery Omoda 5 EV will go on sale in the Indonesian market next year.
The presence of the Chery Omoda 5 EV will certainly make Indonesia crowded with Chinese electric cars. Several electric cars made in China that already exist and have been marketed in Indonesia are the Wuling Air EV and MG 4 EV.
Several other electric cars that are being prepared include the Chery Omoda 5 EV, Neta V, and Ora Good Cat. Of course, this condition will be interesting because in the future China’s electric cars will be much more varied.
President Director of PT Chery Sales Indonesia (CSI), Mr Shawn Xu, at the Chery International User Summit 2023 in Wuhu, China, Sunday (15/10/2023) said that the Chery Omoda 5 EV was actually presented at the GIIAS 2023 event in August 2023.
Now, according to him, Chery has started assembly production (CKD) in Indonesia, including for electric vehicles (EV). This was done after the Chery Omoda 5 EV demo car on display received a positive response from the Indonesian people. Next month, assembly production will be fully operational.
“So I am sure that January or February (2024) will be available for EVs, for all modified EV production, yes January or February (2024),” said Mr Shawn.
Shawn is optimistic about the market share for electric cars in Indonesia. According to him, Indonesia is a very large market with a population of almost 300 million. Economic growth is also good and Indonesia has good relations with China.
The Omoda 5 EV, designed based on global standards, is a futuristic crossover-style SUV. This product has defined its customers, namely young fashion.
“Not only those who are young in age but also fashionistas who are young at heart,” said Shawn.
He also sees that the Indonesian government is the same as China, which provides full support for environmentally friendly technology. This can be seen from the Indonesian government’s efforts to promote electric vehicles.
He admitted that currently the number of electric vehicles in Indonesia is still very small. However, the growth rate is very rapid. “As a leading brand in China, we want to properly seize this opportunity so that our electric vehicles can meet customer needs,” he said.
Omoda 5 EV Specifications
The Chery Omoda 5 EV is among those on display at the Chery International User Summit in Wuhu, China, 15-20 October 2023. In appearance, this SUV has a quite luxurious exterior design. The color is white combined with black in several parts.
The front of the Omoda 5 EV is different from the petrol version. The grille that covers almost all of the front is removed. There is only a small grille at the bottom for the AC condenser. If you pay attention, the front part forms the letter X. Under the words Omoda there is a panel that can be opened to house the charging port.
This electric car is also equipped with four 360 cameras located at the front, precisely under the charging port panel. Then in the right, left and rear mirrors. The main headlights and cornering lamps use LEDs, giving a futuristic impression.
The 18 inch black rims used are combined with silver plastic as a cover. These closed rims are related to aerodynamics which affect mileage and battery efficiency.
On the exterior there is a 24.6 inch screen installed in a curved shape, so that the driver is easier to see. The Omoda 5 EV is equipped with a drive monitor system which is able to provide notifications to the driver to rest if tired.
In the middle there is no transmission lever because it has been moved to the bottom of the steering wheel like a light lever. The steering wheel also feels very luxurious because the attached features use touch screen technology.
The Omoda 5 EV chair also looks cool with the combination of batch and blue colors. Being inside is also very comfortable with the 64 color ambient light feature. The color of the light can be changed according to your mood.
Just like the Omoda 5, there is a sun roof on the roof. Meanwhile at the back there are levels that show a sporty impression. As an indication of the electric car, there is also an emblem on the back. On the right there is an EV emblem and the words Omoda 5 on the rear left.
The Omoda 5 EV is equipped with a 61 kWh battery which is capable of producing 221 horsepower. Acceleration is quite good, reaching a speed of 0-100 km in 7.8 seconds. When the battery is full, this electric SUV is estimated to be able to cover a distance of 450 km.
Chery’s flagship electric car is equipped with a fast charging system. With this feature, a battery percentage of 0-80% can be achieved within 35 minutes.
There has been no official announcement regarding the price of the Omoda 5 EV yet from Chery. However, from the information obtained, the price of the electric SUV is likely to be around IDR 600 million.
