Isuzu will sell electric pickups in 2025. The electric pickup needs to be launched immediately so that it is not eroded by electric cars made in China.
Quoted from Nikkei Asia, Wednesday (30/8/2023), Isuzu sees that currently electric vehicles made by China are starting to invade the Asian region, especially Southeast Asia. This condition makes Isuzu worried because this region is Isuzu’s highest sales market in the pickup car segment.
They don’t want China to interfere with the segment that has long been dominated by Isuzu. The way to do this, of course, is to first introduce an electric pickup.
“The electric pickup will be developed from their best-selling pickup, the Isuzu D-Max. It is planned that the electric pickup will be released in 2025 in Norway and then produced in Thailand,” said Nikkei Asia.
It is known that currently Isuzu dominates the pickup car market in Thailand. The pickup car segment in Thailand contributes a very large amount of sales, namely 40 percent of the total national car sales in the country of the White Elephant.
It’s just that dominance itself could be disrupted considering that Thailand has started to provide many attractive policies for electric vehicles. In fact, this policy was immediately utilized by car manufacturers from China who were busy entering Thauland.
BYD, which is currently the world’s largest seller of electrified vehicles, has even arrived in Thailand by building a factory in East Rayong. Apart from that, there is also another brand, Changan Automobile, which has invested USD 279 million or around IDR 4.2 trillion in Thailand.
Great Wall and SAIC Group were mentioned by Nikkei Asia as also producing electric cars in Thailand. It’s just that most Chinese car brands don’t have electric pickups yet.
This is what Isuzu is anticipating by trying to introduce an electric pickup car in
