Chinese and Japanese Brands Dominate Motorcycle Sales in Italy

Motorcycle sales in Italy set a record in the middle of this year. Unfortunately, sales are dominated by Japanese and Chinese brands.

Even though Italy is known as a country with famous motorcycle brands such as Ducati, Piaggio, Vespa, MV Agusta, and so on. Unfortunately, based on Motorcycles Data, the top five motorcycle sales in Italy are dominated by Japanese and Chinese brands.

According to them mid-year motorcycle sales in Italy reached 201,932 units. This achievement is even the best record for the last 20 years.

“Sales increased driven by the scooter and big motorbike segments with a capacity of 500-750 cc,” said Motorcycles Data.

The problem is that motorcycle sales in the Land of Pizza are indeed dominated by foreign brands such as Japan and China. Even in the top five positions, there is only one Italian representative who is included in the list, namely Piaggio.

In first place, Honda scored sales of 50.2 percent. This was triggered by the high demand for the Honda X-ADV, Honda CBR 750, Honda SH350 and Honda SH150.

In the second position, it was filled by Piaggio with sales of 23.8 percent. In a row from third to fifth were Yamaha, Kymco and BMW.

Many other Italian motorcycle brands have fallen out of the top five. Ducati alone is only in sixth position with sales of 8.7 percent.

Interestingly, Ducati actually get huge acceptance in Italy. Until the middle of this year they managed to sell 34,976 units of motorbikes which is the biggest record they have ever achieved.

A total of 6,639 units of Ducati are known to have been sold in Italy. It’s just that this achievement has not matched the sales of motorcycles achieved by Japanese and Chinese motorcycle brands.

“Competition in the post-Covid-19 motorcycle market is much tougher,” said Francesco Milicia, Vice President of Ducati.
