PT Chery Sales Indonesia (CSI) once again attempts to disrupt the automotive market prices in Indonesia. After surprising everyone with the Chery Tiggo 5X priced at IDR 239 million, CSI now seems to be shaking up the medium SUV automotive segment with the Chery Tiggo 8.
Yes, the Chery Tiggo 8 is a new variant of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, which has a diesel engine. Equipped with the same dimensions, the Chery Tiggo 8 uses a gasoline engine previously used in the Omoda 5 GT, a 1.600 cc four-cylinder with a turbo.
“The powertrain is different from the Tiggo 8, but we use a 1.6 Turbo engine, 0-100 in under 9 seconds which we think is fast enough for daily use,” said Zheng Shuo, Assistant President Director of CSI, in Senayan, Central Jakarta, Monday, July 8, 2024.
Almost everything found in the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro can be found in the Chery Tiggo 8. This includes the same large dimensions: 4,722 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,705 mm in height.
It also includes modern features such as a more comprehensive semi-autonomous technology or ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance System). This model has nine features that work together using radar sensors and camera assistance to read objects and road markings.
The question, of course, is the price. So far, CSI has not officially announced the price of the Chery Tiggo 8. Ilham Pratama, Head of Marketing at PT CSI, revealed that they are still in the discussion stage to determine the right price for the Tiggo 8. Reportedly, the price of this car will be revealed soon.
“For the price, it could be IDR 400 million-IDR 450 million. This is only for the Indonesian market, so it’s not sold in other countries. All the products we release to the market (Indonesia) are already CKD (locally produced),” said Ilham.
This price is much more affordable compared to the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, which is priced at IDR 528 million to IDR 558.5 million.
Interestingly, the Chery Tiggo 8 will certainly be quite a significant disruption for models in its class, namely the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-8.
Currently, the Honda CR-V has a starting price of IDR 749.1 million, while the Wuling Almaz is at IDR 638 million. The only medium SUV that can compete with the Chery Tiggo 8 is the Wuling Almaz, which currently has a price range of IDR 402 million to IDR 442 million.
