Calculating Chinese Cars Performance in 2023, Can’t Disturb Japan Domination

It turns out that Chinese car manufacturers in Indonesia are still unable to shake the dominance of Japanese cars in Indonesia. Even though their presence often steals people’s attention, because of design and technology, the dominance of Japanese cars has not yet been undermined.

Based on retail data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) during January-November 2023, the cumulative sales of Chinese brand cars only reached 27,717 units.

Meanwhile, total retail sales during January-November 2023 reached 28,798 units. It is known that total retail sales in the same period reached 908,462 units.

This means that the total contribution of Chinese cars throughout January – November 2023 is only 3.1 percent. Very small and doesn’t live up to the recent hype.

Details of Chinese car sales throughout January-November 2023 are as follows:

1. Wuling 22,586 units
2. Chery 3,640 units
3. DFSK 1,413 units
4. Morris Garage 1,052 units
5. Netta 100 units
4. SERES 7 units

The total sales of Chinese cars can even be said to be the same as Toyota’s monthly sales in Indonesia. It is known that throughout January-November 2023, Toyota is the best-selling car brand with a total sales of 294,570 units.

From the same data, it is also known that Japanese brands dominate the top five best-selling retail car sales in Indonesia. Here’s the data:

1. Toyota 24,570 units
2. Daihatsu 179,023 units
3. Honda 116,802 units
4. Mitsubishi 75,053 units
5. Suzuki 74,123 units

Previously, Vice President of PT Chery Sales Indonesia, Harry Kamora, once said that Chinese cars need a hard fight to break the dominance of Japanese cars in the country.

“Currently, Indonesian people are still too segmented by Japanese cars,” he said.

He believes that in the future Chinese cars will be able to disrupt cars made in Japan. It’s just that Chinese cars can take up 2.5 percent of the total Indonesian automotive market.

It should be noted that currently automotive sales in Indonesia per year average at 1 million units.

“Just imagine if each of them could take 2.5 percent of the total sales of the Indonesian automotive market. The number could reach 250,000 units per year. This will make Japanese manufacturers worried,” said Harry Kamora.

Unfortunately, currently, this percentage is difficult for every Chinese car brand selling in Indonesia to obtain. This percentage will only be obtained when all sales of Chinese brand cars are accumulated into one, as happened during January-November 2023.
