BMW will sue BYD for using the Mini name

German automotive company BMW will sue BYD for using the Mini name. Quoted by Drive, Tuesday (12/3/2024), BMW was apparently not happy with the Chinese automotive company’s efforts to patent the Mini name on their new electric car.

It is known that the name Mini is planned to be used for their small electric car, the BMW Dolphin Mini. This name is another name for BYD Seagull.

It is planned that the name BYD Dolphin Mini will be used in various countries in Southeast Asia and Australia. That desire is opposed by BMW. The reason is that currently BMW has a lifestyle car line called Mini.

“If this patent application is approved, it will disrupt the Mini Cooper brand,” said Drive.

Mini representatives in Australia themselves are aware of the efforts made by BYD in using the Mini name. They confirmed that currently the parent company, BMW, has analyzed the losses that would be felt if the Mini name patent submitted by BYD is approved by the relevant authorities.

“At this time, we have not provided further information because we are still investigating,” wrote Mini Australia’s official statement.

It is known that since 1994, BMW has held the official Mini license. At that time, BMW bought the Mini brand from an original company called the Rover Group, which was previously called British Leyland.
