Battery and Infrastructure Still Pose Challenges for Electric Vehicle Adoption in Indonesia

Issues with batteries and supporting infrastructure continue to hinder the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Indonesia. This situation is revealed by the latest Populix research titled “Electric Vehicle Dynamics: Unveiling Consumer Perspectives and Market Insights,”.

The survey reveals that Indonesian consumers still have several concerns regarding owning electric vehicles. Some of these concerns include battery range during journeys (65%), limited driving range capacity (61%), and the fact that not all workshops accept repairs for non-electric issues (49%).

“Additionally, the limitations in infrastructure or charging facilities (43%) and the scarcity of charging station locations, often located far apart (42%), also pose challenges faced by consumers in using electric vehicles,” stated Populix.

Meanwhile, Dr. Timothy Astandu, CEO & Co-Founder of Populix, emphasized the need for collaboration between regulators and electric vehicle manufacturers to address these challenges. Despite the growing population of electric vehicles, there are still many concerns emerging regarding their usage.

“Understanding consumer challenges and preferences, this synergy is key to driving broader EV adoption and enhancing the growth of the electric vehicle industry in Indonesia,” he said.

At the same time, VP of Research at Populix, Indah Tanip, explained that current electric vehicle purchases are strongly driven by promotional programs. Preferred promotional formats among consumers include special discounts from manufacturers such as price reductions or cashback (65%), battery or unit warranties (65%), government subsidies in the form of direct discounts or incentives (57%), and special package offers during specific periods (43%).
