PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM) made a surprise by releasing the All New Yaris Cross as the first electrified vehicle in the 5-seater medium SUV segment. This model competes with the Honda HR-V, Chery Omoda 5, Hyundai Creta, Wuling Alvez, and KIA Seltos.
The Medium SUV itself is a very fat market. Practically Toyota only has Rush (7-passenger) in this class. Therefore, the presence of the All New Yaris Cross with a 5-seater will be a new option for consumers. Moreover, Toyota also presents a hybrid variant.
“The Indonesian automotive industry has entered the era of electrification. In fact, the number of vehicles with batteries (Battery Electric Vehicles/BEV) in April 2023 has reached 6 percent,” said Vice President Director of PT Toyota-Astra Motor, Henry Tanoto.
According to him, this is also in line with the Multi Pathway Strategy provided by Toyota, starting from Hybrid EV, Plug-in Hybrid EV, to Battery EV.
Toyota has not officially announced the price of the All-New Yaris Cross. However, it is estimated that it will be around Rp. 300 million-Rp. 400 million. Most likely the Yaris Cross will be Toyota’s cheapest hybrid car.
For comparison, the price for the Innova Zenix 2.0 G HV is IDR 458,000,000. So, the price of the All-New Yaris Cross is most likely not far from that price.
Another fact, the All-New Yaris Cross is the second Toyota electrification vehicle produced locally after the Innova Zenix.
By expanding the choice of electrified vehicles to the middle segment, Toyota hopes that more and more people will participate in efforts to reduce exhaust emissions so that they can play an active role in achieving carbon neutrality.
Henry Tanoto said that the All-New Yaris Cross launched in Indonesia is a World Premiere. “Because it is very different compared to the Yaris Cross which has been launched from other countries,” he said.
Toyota itself has been a pioneer of electrification vehicles in Indonesia since 2009, by incorporating electrification technology as part of its Multi Pathway Strategy to contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
With the Multi Pathway approach, Toyota presents a wide selection of environmentally friendly technologies based on Electric Vehicles (EV), starting from Hybrid EV (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid EV (PHEV), and Battery EV (BEV).
According to Henry, the All-New Yaris Cross is expected to provide more complete options for customers with high mobility on weekdays who also want to enjoy adventure or other outdoor activities on weekends, as well as meet their sporty and dynamic lifestyle needs every day using the Advanced Urban SUV All- New Yaris Cross.
