Electric Cars Catching Fire Not Covered by Insurance, Here Are the Facts

Incidents of electric cars catching fire have not yet occurred in Indonesia. However, recently there has been an issue circulating that insurance will not cover losses if an electric car catches fire.

Hadi Sutopo, Motor Business Department Head of Tokio Marine, told Beritasatu.com on Monday (27/5/2024) that there are some understandings that need to be clarified regarding insurance responsibility for electric cars catching fire. There are certain circumstances where insurance indeed will not cover losses if an electric car catches fire.

“It first needs to be understood how the electric car could catch fire. From there, insurance will determine whether it can cover it or not,” he explained.

He mentioned that electric cars catching fire due to an incident can still be covered by insurance. For example, if there is a collision involving an electric car and it causes the green vehicle to catch fire.

The situation is quite different if the electric car catches fire without any apparent cause. For instance, if an electric car parked suddenly catches fire.

This also includes cases where an electric car suddenly catches fire while recharging its battery. So, there is no external cause that makes the electric car catch fire.

“Such conditions are not covered by insurance,” he explained.

He is confident that the technology currently possessed by electric cars is very advanced. The likelihood of an electric car suddenly catching fire by itself is very small.

“To date, there have been no recorded cases of electric cars catching fire in Indonesia,” he emphasized.
