Ultra-Wealthy Individuals Not Tempted to Buy Electric Sports Cars

Mate Rimac, owner of Bugatti and Rimac, stated that ultra-wealthy individuals are not tempted to buy electric sports cars. He revealed this during his speech at the Financial Times Future of the Car event in London, England, this week.

Quoted from Autocar, Sunday (12/5/2024), Mate Rimac mentioned that ultra-wealthy individuals are not tempted to buy electric sports cars due to the massively popular electrification trend. Every car manufacturer is now actively producing various types of electric cars.

Currently, electric cars are available in various types, from electric cars for daily activities to sports cars. “In the past, we produced Rimac electric cars when the trend was not so high. Now, everyone is busy making fast electric cars,” said Mate Rimac.

This makes ultra-wealthy individuals uninterested. They want a car that can symbolize prestige. According to Mate Rimac, this is what conventional sports cars like Bugatti, which he also owns, offer.

He cited that all models produced by Bugatti have been sold out. Every time Bugatti prepares a new car, many ultra-wealthy individuals are already in line.

The situation is different with Rimac, whose sales are declining. The Rimac Nevera, the most powerful electric sports car made by Rimac, has only sold 50 units so far.

“We produced the Nevera in 2016 and so far, only 50 units have been sold. I see electrification as already too mainstream. Those in the upper echelons want something that makes them look special,” said Mate Rimac.

He even compared the sales of electric sports cars to the sales of the Apple Watch smartwatch. According to him, everyone can now buy an Apple Watch with many attractive features.

However, individuals in the upper echelons prefer conventional expensive watches like Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and others.

“Apple Watch can do everything. But no one wants to buy an Apple Watch for $200,000 like they do with Rolex,” he explained.
