Hyundai Ioniq 5: Indonesia’s Best-Selling Electric Car with a Price Anomaly!

The Indonesian electric car market is surprising because there is a shift in the best-selling electric car category in Indonesia throughout 2023. The Wuling Air EV, which was previously always the leader in electric car sales in the country, has actually been replaced by the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Based on wholesale data, deliveries from factories to dealers, the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), Hyundai Ioniq 5 were successfully delivered to dealers totaling 7,176 units. On the other hand, Wuling Air ev is in second place with a record of 5,575 units.

Compared to last year, wholesale sales of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 have indeed increased drastically. In 2022 Hyundai can only send 1,786 units.

This means that an extraordinary increase will occur throughout 2023. This success is also a special note because in terms of price, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 cannot be said to be in the same class as the Wuling Air ev.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 comes in four variants, namely the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Prime Standard Range (Rp. 782 million), Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range (Rp. 823 million), Hyundai Ioniq 5 Signature Standard Range (Rp. 845 million), and Hyundai Ioniq 5 Siganture Long Range (Rp. 895 million ).

So in terms of price, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is not in the affordable category. Interestingly, this has not dampened Indonesian people’s interest in the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

And this is against previous expectations. Many analysts say that the price of electric cars in Indonesia is still very expensive. This is because Indonesian people want the price of electric cars sold to be in the range of IDR 300 million. Because the best-selling cars in Indonesia on average have a price tag of IDR 300 million.

For example, the statement by Kukuh Kumara, General Secretary of Gaikindo, said that the market share for electric cars that is most popular with Indonesians is under IDR 300 million. He said there was still minimal interest in electric cars with prices above IDR 300 million-IDR 500 million.

“Most people who buy electric cars in Indonesia have affordable prices under IDR 300 million. If the price is above IDR 300 million, the volume is very small,” said Kukuh Kumara.

So why is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 the best seller? The first is none other than the name Hyundai itself, which is already relatively well established as an automotive company.

This is different from electric cars which cost under IDR 500 million and under. On average, electric cars in this price range are only supplied by Chinese car manufacturers.

On the other hand, established names such as Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and BMW are playing in the premium electric car segment with prices in the billions of rupiah.

The only other electric car swimming in the same price segment is the Nissan Leaf. Unfortunately, the electric car from Nissan did not receive a positive response.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

This is related to the second factor why the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is so well received by Indonesian people. The cause is the growing network of dealers and supporting infrastructure for electric cars.

Now Hyundai Ioniq 5 owners don’t need to worry about the condition of the battery. Hyundai has installed a network of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) on Google Maps. So Hyundai Ioniq 5 consumers will not worry if they want to recharge the battery.

Not to mention that Hyundai provides special service in after-sales service. Hyundai doesn’t want owners of their electric cars to be afraid when using them for daily activities.

Some of the services include an eight-year battery guarantee. Free AC home charger and installation fees. Likewise with the 24 hour Emergency Mobile Charging Service.

Apart from that, the design and dimensions of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 also have their own selling power. So it is very natural that finally the ginseng country’s electric car is selling well in Indonesia.
