Mitsubishi make history because it became the first Japanese car manufacturer to produce electric cars in Indonesia locally. To be exact, the electric car is the Mitsubishi Minicab EV light commercial electric car.
Later, in Indonesia the car will change its name from the Mitsubishi Minicab EV to the Mitsubishi L100 EV. The light commercial electric car itself is produced at the Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Indonesia (MMKI) factory in
It is planned that Mitsubishi’s flagship light commercial electric car will go on sale in Indonesia in the fourth quarter of the 2023 fiscal year.
“In 2017, MMKI started production of the Xpander, which is now not only sold domestically in Indonesia, but also exported to support the development of the Indonesian automotive industry,” said Takao Kato, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors.
He explained that the production of electric cars in Indonesia was an important note for Mitsubishi. According to him, this electric car is the first electric vehicle produced outside Japan.
“We hope to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles in the ASEAN region and at the same time contribute to environmental initiatives in this country,” he stressed.
Meanwhile Atsushi Kurita, President Director of PT. Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Sales Indonesia (MMKSI) revealed that choosing Indonesia as the first country outside Japan to produce the Mitsubishi L100 EV was a significant step for Mitsubishi Motors.
“We are proud to be part of this environmental initiative. With studies that have been previously carried out in Indonesia regarding the efficiency of using BEVs in the light commercial vehicle segment, we are ready to start marketing this product in Indonesia at the beginning of next year,” he said.
It is known that the Mitsubishi L100 EV is very different from the electric cars currently available in Indonesia. This light commercial electric car comes with a monobox design. The light commercial electric car has a battery placed under the center of the floor.
This battery position means that the Mitsubishi L100 EV still has large vehicle cargo space. Additionally the low center of gravity provides excellent steering stability and a pleasant ride.
