G-Class Production Stops Next Year, Signs of End of Production

Mercedes-Benz will stop production of the legendary SUV, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, in 2024. The plan is to stop production from starting in the first quarter of 2024, namely January to March.

The cessation of production immediately made many people wonder. The reason is that they suspect that this step is an initial attempt by Mercedes-Benz to euthanize or completely stop production of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

“The current model will indeed stop production. After that, the more updated G-Class with a newer design will enter the production stage,” said Drive, Monday (18/9/2023).

It is known that currently the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is produced by Magna Steyr which is located in Austria. At that factory, Magna Steyr also makes BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra cars.

Autocar further said that there will be big changes from the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class next year. Some designs will be influenced by the design of the Mercedes-Benz EQG electric SUV. This was done to increase fuel efficiency.

“There will be a very dramatic improvement in aerodynamics,” said Dr Emerich Schiller, head of the G-Class business unit.

“We will apply what we have learned with the electric version to petrol engine cars,” he continued.

Previously, Mercedes-Benz also had other plans for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The German luxury car company wants to present a small version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class or Baby G-Class.

This was revealed by Olla Kallenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG to Bloomberg, Sunday (3/9/2023). He said the Baby G-Class is the child of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

So the size will be much more compact. The consumer segmentation will also be different because the Baby G-Class will be positioned as an entry level SUV from Mercedes-Benz.

“It will be worth the wait,” said Ola Kallenius.

Although complete details cannot be confirmed, Autocar predicts that the Baby G-Class will be presented in 2026. The launch of this model is planned to coincide with an affordable electric car made by Mercedes-Benz

Later the Baby G-Class will be available in two options, namely electric and conventional. Mercedes-Benz is said to not be using an existing electric car platform to develop the Baby G-Class.

“We see great potential here to expand our high-end portfolio with more interesting products,” said Ola Kallenius.
