GIIAS 2023 Opens, Minister Airlangga Wants Indonesian Automotive to Play Futsal

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto wants the Indonesian automotive industry to play futsal and no longer play football when opening the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show 2023 (GIIAS) at ICE BSD City, Tangerang, Thursday (10/8/2023). This was in response to a statement by the General Chairperson of the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), Yohannes Nangoi, who was present at the same event, who said that the Indonesian automotive industry was ranked 11th in the world in terms of car production.

“If number 11 can only play ball. We want to play futsal. So we will rank below ten,” said Airlanggar Hartarto.

It is known that different from soccer players who need 11 players, futsal requires five players. This means that Airlangga Hartarto wants Indonesia’s current ranking at eleven to enter the top five next year.

Airlangga Hartarto continued that as a whole Indonesia did experience many surprises. Go beyond the analysis and predictions of observers and institutions.

“Indonesia has managed to grow beyond expectations from analysts and institutions because it can grow 5.7 percent. Growth above 5 percent has occurred for seven consecutive quarters and shows Indonesia has strong resilience and is included in the Upper Middle Country category,” explained Airlangga Hartarto.

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy, who is also the General Chair of the Golkar Party, also hopes that the automotive industry can increase export capabilities. He hopes this year’s exports can be increased to 500,000 units.

“This year the target is 500,000 units. Actually it is very small because it only added 30,000 units because last year’s CBU exports reached 470,000 units,” he explained.

Meanwhile Yohannes Nangoi said that last year the national automotive industry managed to close 2022 very well. Even exceeding the achievements before the Covid-19 pandemic occurred in 2020.

It is known that in 2022 wholesale automotive sales will reach 1,084,040 units. On the retail side, sales reached 1,013,584 units.

“The Indonesian automotive industry is committed to supporting the domestic market and pushing Indonesia to become a production base for export activities and attracting foreign investment,” hoped Yohannes Nangoi.
