Old electric-powered Toyota Land Cruiser Successfully Walks in the Sea as Far as 7 Kilometers

An old electric-powered Toyota Land Cruiser called the Mudcrab managed to set a world record after successfully running under the sea for seven kilometers. The record-breaking action began in the Port of Darwin, Australia recently.

The car, made in Japan in 1978, then from the beach immediately plunged into the open sea for eight kilometers. The car itself was driven by a driver and one passenger.

During the record-breaking action, both of them were equipped with complete diving equipment.

“The old electric-powered Toyota Land Cruiser then traveled seven kilometers and walked at a depth of 30 meters,” wrote Carscoops, Tuesday (1/8/2023).

The action itself is known to have been inspired by the efforts of a group of divers from Darwin, Australia who tried to do the same thing in the 1980s. At that time they could only walk three kilometers because they broke down in the middle of the sea.

The condition was then analyzed and corrected in the record-breaking attempt this year. From their assessment, it is known that the record-breaking attempt made in the 1980s failed because the car used still retained conventional car components.

As a result the car then broke down and could only walk as far as three kilometers. In their latest record attempt to replace the Toyota Land Cruiser engine with an electric motor.

The component is then placed into a special section complete with impervious protection and pressure. In addition, they also checked every part of the car that leads to the electric motor so that water cannot enter it.

“We have to make sure all of these components can withstand the water and the pressure. So we have to make a room that is strong in pressure and has a strong battery,” said Glen Summer, the car owner.

That’s the reason that made Glen Summer choose the Toyota Land Cruiser in 1978. The reason is that this old car is very easy to disassemble and has a very strong chassis to protect the battery while running under the sea.

“I am not interested in using the more modern Toyota Land Cruiser because this car is the most suitable. This car does not need to go fast because in the sea the speed is only 1 to 3 kilometers per hour,” explained Glen Summers.

Another change is the tires. The four car tires are still the same. Only they filled it with water. So when in the sea the tires will still tread well.

Of the various modifications, the car can indeed run well in the sea. It’s just that it took more than 12 hours to reach a distance of seven kilometers. This happens because cars always get stuck in the mud when they are under the sea.

What is certain is that their efforts were fantastic because they managed to set a record for a car that can travel the furthest distance under the sea.
