Another car manufacturer that no longer makes manual transmission cars. BMW has finally said goodbye to the manual transmission.
Autocar New Zealand said that currently the only new BMW car with manual transmission that remains is the BMW M2 produced in 2022. This means that after that car there will be no new BMW cars with manual transmission.
“This is not only BMW’s decision, but also because of the scarcity of supply. If you look at it in the future, the supply of manual transmission gearboxes will decrease because no one is producing them anymore. So we are not sure whether this transmission has a future,” said Dirk Hacker, BMW M Head of Development.
He also dismissed the idea that manual transmission could be maintained by using it in electric cars. This method will be used by Toyota when developing the latest electric cars.
“It is indeed very doable but we chose not to try it,” said Dirk Hacker.
Not only that, the car manufacturer based in Munich, Germany will also no longer make cars with dual clutch. Instead, the system was transferred to the production of torque converter automation.
The decision to switch the dual clutch to a torque converter actually has a follow-on effect for manual transmission cars made by BMW. Because the torque converter only functions optimally in cars with automatic transmissions.
“The dual clutch in our view is also very outdated. In the future the torque converter will provide better performance than the double clutch,” explained Dirk Hacker.
He said BMW was already feeling the positive impact of the torque converter. He said the technology had already been applied to racing cars made by BMW, such as the BMW M4 CSL and BMW M4 GTR.
