China is not deterred from pirating the design of the famous Land Rover Defender. Now it’s the Rox Motor company’s turn to make that illegal effort.
According to Car News China, Rox Motor has just launched an SUV-type car called Stone 01. Interestingly, this car is very similar to the latest Land Rover Defender.
This can be seen from the sides and rear of the car body which closely resembles the legendary British-made SUV. The untrained eye would mistake the Chinese-made car for the new Land Rover Defender.
“Even the position of the spare tire is very similar to the Land Rover Defender. The only difference is the front which seems to have been slightly modified so that it is not always the same as the Land Rover Defender,” said Carbuzz.
The similarity of the cars is not only visible in terms of design. Rox Motor even followed Land Rover’s way by providing two wheelbase choices. If the Land Rover Defender has 110 and 130 wheelbase types, then Stone 01 has Rox Motor has two wheelbase options, namely 199 inches and 208 inches.
Uniquely Rox Motor is not playing around in making this car. Even though it’s pirated, they still provide some advanced technology in Stone 01.
Based on published photos, at least Stone 01 is equipped with LiDAR or optical remote sensing technology that measures the properties of scattered light to find distance and/or other information from distant targets. This technology makes Stone 01 have advanced security features, namely the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).
For engine specifications, Carbuzz says the car is a 1.5 liter turbo engine with a plug-in hybrid battery. The engine can generate as much as 150 horsepower which acts as a generator for the ternary lithium-ion battery pack sourced from battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL). The battery pack powers front and rear electric motors that produce 201 horsepower and 268 horsepower respectively.
It is known that Land Rover often messes around with copyright issues in China. The Stone 01 isn’t the only Chinese copycat of the Land Rover Defender. Earlier this year, YangWang unveiled the U8, which looks like a tougher version of the British off-roader.
Like Stone 01, YangWang U8 is also very powerful. The car stores a maximum power of 1,100 horsepower thanks to the use of four electric motors.
