62 Percent of Electric Cars in Indonesia, Costs More Than Billions of Rupiah

Electric cars keep coming to Indonesia. The problem is that 62 percent of the green cars are very expensive because they are translucent billions of rupiah.

The latest electric car to come to Indonesia is the Lexus RZ. This SUV electric car tempts the Indonesian people with a price that amazes me, namely IDR 2.287 billion.

Based on research by MNC Portal Indonesia, currently there are 21 pure electric cars being sold in Indonesia. This figure does not include the light commercial electric cars offered by DFSK and Esemka.

This figure is also obtained without counting the electric cars imported by general importers. For example, Tesla’s electric cars are imported directly from the United States by Prestige Motors.

This number is also calculated without including other green cars in the form of hybrid cars and plug-in hybrids. The number 21 electric car is purely a car driven entirely by batteries.

From the available data, it turns out that 62 percent of pure electric cars in Indonesia have cost billions of rupiah. The two most expensive electric cars available today are held by Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Their two flagship electric cars, the Mercedes-Benz EQS and the BMW i7, both cost Rp. 3.4 billion. The status is still off the road. So if it’s really a matter of paperwork or the legality of using it on the way out, the price could be more than IDR 3.4 billion.

Currently, electric cars that cost under billions of rupiah are very limited. Consumers only have a choice of electric cars from Hyundai, Wuling, Nissan and MG.

If we narrow it down to the category of electric cars that cost under half a billion rupiah, then there is only one choice, namely Wuling Air ev.

It’s no wonder that the electric cars that dominate the market in Indonesia are Wuling Air ev and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Previously, the Main Director of PT Indonesia Battery Industry or Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) Toto Nugroho in a hearing with Commission VI of the Indonesian Parliament some time ago said that the price of electric cars in Indonesia was expensive because there was no battery factory in the country.

“Suppose we compare how easy it is for Ioniq 5 in Indonesia and in Korea, the battery itself is produced in Korea, the shipping costs are practically small,” said Toto Nugroho.

On the other hand, Toto added, the incentives prepared by a number of countries were far more significant to reduce the selling price of electric shock cars in their respective markets. This government assistance has succeeded in encouraging massive purchases and manufacturing for electric cars today.
