Transformers Rise of the Beast film director Steven Caple Jr. revealed the ups and downs of using an old car as the main star of the film. Unlike the previous Transformers films, the film which was just released last weekend does rely on old cars.
For example, the main star of the classic Chevrolet Camaro, which was produced in 1977. So did the 1967 Volkswagen Combi, 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera, 1993 Nissan Skyline R33, and an old Freigthliner truck.
To Motor Trends, Steven Caple Jr. admitted that there had been a lot of effort made to keep these old cars in prime condition. Because the age is not young to make the cars that need special handling.
Not to mention the 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera which is quite special. Because Porsche only produces as many as 55 units of the car worldwide.
Steven Caple Jr. admitted that Porsche provided one real car for the purposes of the film. It’s just that they then rented another Porsche car to be used as a replica. The goal is that the original car is not damaged.
“In the end we had six Porsche 911 cars for this car. We bought two and rented the rest,” said Steven Caple Jr.
Another unique experience is actually felt when trying to own a Nissan Skyline R33. Steven Caple Jr admitted that he needed a lot of Nissan Skyline R33 cars to shoot the film.
The problem is that Japanese-made cars are hard to find in the United States. As a result they were only able to buy two cars. The rest they build themselves by buying component by component available.
“We bought two and already had examples. So we ended up building the car ourselves,” said Steven Caple Jr.
The saddest fate actually happened when shooting an old Freightliner truck that became the vehicle of Optimus Prime. The truck was very old and needed a lot of work when it was filming in Cusco, Peru.
“So many times the truck broke down because it was too old. The funny thing is that the news leaked on the internet so many said Optimus Prime was finished,” said the director who was born on February 16, 1988.
Even though there are many sad stories, Steven Caple Jr. admits that he is proud to finally be able to introduce old cars in the Transformers film franchise. At least the cars are in keeping with the early versions of the old Transformers animated series.
